Zhang Meizhen, head of the Earth Science Popularization and Communication Guidance Team, professor, deputy dean of the School of Arts and Communication, member of the Academic Committee of CUG, and head of the national first-class program of Radio and Television Studies, serves as the vice president of Hubei Journalism and Communication Education Society, the secretary-general of Hubei Science and Technology Communication Society, an online review expert of Henry Fok Young Teachers Fund and Young Teacher Award of the Ministry of Education, an review expert of the Social Science Fund of Hubei Province, and a member of the review committee of Hubei Journalism Award. She offers courses such as “Media Management” and “Introduction to Journalism and Communication”, and her main research field is media operation and management. Her research achievements have been awarded the Third Prize for Excellent Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences of Hubei Province twice, the Second Prize for Teaching Achievements in Higher Education Institutions of Hubei Province, and Teacher Excellence Award of CUG.
About the Author
Yang Ying, female, a graduate student of Grade 2022 at the School of Arts and Communication, graduated from Communication University of China, and is now a postgraduate moral education assistant of the university, with the main research field of visual and image communication. She has been awarded honors such as university-level “Three-Good Student”, “Excellent Student Leader” and “Excellent League Member”, has participated in the planning of the Integrated Media Communication Activities for the 23rd National Mandarin Promotion Week and won the first prize in the 2023 Hubei University Student Journalism and Communication Education Innovation Practice Skills Competition and the second prize in the 9th Science Popularization Public Welfare Works Competition of Jiangsu Province.
It started with my first meeting with my supervisor. The first time I had contact with Ms. Zhang Meizhen was an online interview for recommended exam-free master degree candidates. At that time, there was no image but only sound, and the first time I heard the teacher encouraging me to apply for a different major, it made my heart heat up, and I began to have a strong interest in journalism and communication studies. Last September, I met Ms. Zhang for the first time in the corridor of the School Building, with a smile on her face, although it was early autumn, it felt the warmth of spring! I had my first teaching-learning exchange with my supervisor in the classroom, where I was reacquainted with the media environment and the media industry; my teacher encouraged me to participate in professional competitions multiple times, which gave me the joy of winning prizes. To this day, looking back at the little moments after entering CUG and the exchanges with fellow classmates and seniors, I want to express my love for my supervisor.

Guiding students to pursue academic innovation based on their individual characteristics
Based on the different characteristics of each student, Ms. Zhang leverages their respective strengths and advocates for the cultivation of academic and theoretical innovation abilities through academic research, as well as the improvement of students’ application and comprehensive qualities through practical creation.
Student Su Hui has a solid foundation in participating in research projects, so she was invited to participate in the supervisor’s important projects such as social science fund for research and academic exchanges; she is currently studying for a doctoral degree at CUG and has published multiple T2 papers. Cao Xinyi and Chen Xin have potential in academic paper writing, so Ms. Zhang strengthened training for them in topic selection, literature, methodology and writing skills, and published several T3 papers. Chen Jiayue and Xiong Yawen have unique advantages in professional practice and artistic creation, so they have completed a series of science videos, propaganda films and various competition works through various professional competitions, large-scale events and science popularization, and have won awards in national and provincial college student advertising art competitions and science popularization micro video competitions multiple times.

I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Visual Communication from Communication University of China. During the recommended exam-free for graduate studies in 2022, Ms. Zhang clearly proposed my research direction in visual and image communication, she asked me to plan ahead and integrate art and journalism communication to form distinctive research results, which pointed out the direction for my future study planning.

Value guidance: Guiding students to cultivate their deep love for the country
Journalism and communication studies have strong ideological attributes and practicality. Ms. Zhang has always been upheld the correct value pursuit, focused on the ideological leadership, guided us on how to establish a Marxist view of journalism, how to adhere to the correct view of public opinion, and how to become practitioners of the “four forces” of news and public opinion, and has always incorporated these elements into classroom teaching, subject selection, dissertation writing and practical creation, achieving significant results in ideological and political guidance and scientific research.

“We are running the journalism and communication discipline at China University of Geosciences, so we must combine it with the advantageous disciplines of the university”, as the head of the journalism and communication discipline, Ms. Zhang, in addition to the condensation of discipline direction and the team building, she also reflect it students’ thesis topics on ecological preservation and habitable planet. Science popularization, environmental governance and wetland protection information dissemination, geological scientist spirit inheritance, and water pollution reporting have become hot topics of our research team, and three dissertations have been awarded outstanding master’s thesis at university level. In the past four years, zhang meizhen’s teaching team has presided over five teaching projects on ideological and political education in all courses and Young Marxists Foster Project, and opened a series of courses on “Marxist Journalism Education” and “Environment and Science and Technology Communication”, so as to integrate the ideological and political education in all courses with discipline characteristics and achieve a benign coupling of value leadership and knowledge transfer.

Educating people through culture: guiding students to all-round success
The university has already formed a distinctive campus culture, academic culture and educational culture in its 71 years of schooling practice, and the team, benefiting from the university’s cultural approach, carries out relevant academic research and practical innovation activities around the theme of geoscience popularization and dissemination. The practical exploration and effectiveness of the team in science popularization and communication have received high attention and praise from the government and universities. They have been invited to conduct grassroots science popularization training for the Hongshan District Government of Wuhan City, and have held science popularization lectures for universities such as Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and Nanjing University of Science and Technology, which have demonstrated our role in cultivating talents in geoscience popularization and communication with unique disciplinary advantages and cultural tension. This is how we tell the story of geoscience - written in words, recorded on camera, and delivered in sound.
In the large-scale events of the University, as well as the series of reports on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 70th anniversary of the founding of CUG, you can always see the names of Wang Huichao and other students, who write the red culture stories of CUG in words. Science education films such as “Exploring the Key Belt of the Earth” and “The Story of the Moon Spring” have won many awards in various competitions at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, and they use their lenses to record the mysteries of science and the wonders of the Earth. Yawen Xiong won the first prize in the Hubei Provincial Science Lecture Competition, and has hosted many large-scale university events as a presenter. Li Zhiyi once played the female lead Chu Yun in the university stage play “Light of the Earth”, and they have conveyed the university strategy of beautiful China and habitable planet with their voices.
