(Reported by Xiang Ping’an; photo by Li Ziye) On October 23, 2023, the First Sino-Korean International Conference on “Art and Design” for Doctoral Students, 2023 was held simultaneously at three offline venues, namely 1104 Academic Lecture Hall of the School of Arts and Communication at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), the 4/F Conference Hall of the Beautiful Leadership Administration at Korea Anyang University, and the 301 Conference Hall of the Zhiyun Building at Qingdao Huanghai University.
Co-organized by Korea Anyang University, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and Qingdao Huanghai University, the conference focused on academic exchanges in art, history, design, and aesthetic education. The academic curators were Prof. Jia Xizeng from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University and Prof. Xiao Shimeng from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, while the academic advisors were Prof. Li Ying, Dean of the School of International Exchange and Head of the Department of Art Education, Korea Anyang University, Prof. He Qingjun from the School of Arts and Communication, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), and Prof. Zhang Chengyi from the School of Film and Television, Qingdao Huanghai University.
The conference officially began at 8:30 a.m. Professor Jia Xizeng from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, presided over the opening ceremony, and Wang Fu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of CUG, delivered a speech on behalf of CUG.
In the morning and afternoon kick-off speeches, Prof. Luo Shiping from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Zhu Hu, Director of the Editorial Department of Research of Chinese Fine Arts, respectively made academic exchanges at the conference with the themes of “Reading Pictures: Common Sense and Orientation” and “The Uses of Images as Historical Evidence: Ultra-close Reading and Big Data”.

In the academic exchange session for doctoral students, 24 PhDs from China Academy of Art, the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, Communication University of China, Donghua University, Wuhan University, Anyang University (Korea), Dongseo University (Korea), University of Leeds (UK), Kingston University (UK), Politecnico di Milano (Italy), and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), etc., gave keynote speeches around 4 academic sections. The “Art” section was presided over by Prof. Li Ying; the “History” section was presided over by Prof. Jia Xizeng; the “Design” section was presided over by Prof. He Qingjun, and the “Aesthetic Education” section was academically presided over by Prof. Xiao Shimeng. Experts, scholars, and graduate students from different universities had in-depth exchanges in relevant disciplinary fields around different topics.

At the closing ceremony of the conference in the afternoon, Prof. Jia Xizeng from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University and Prof. Li Ying from Korea Anyang University made summaries of the conference respectively. Prof. Jia expressed his appreciation to the doctoral students who participated in today's exchanges and fully recognized the academic contribution of the conference. Prof. Li Ying expressed her outlook on future international academic exchanges, hoping to strengthen academic exchanges with China as well as other countries, to promote academic cooperation and research, and to make more contributions to the field of art and design.
