On May 29, 2023, the Central South Division of the 2023 (16th) Chinese Collegiate Computing Competition announced the review results of the entries. The documentary “Roots” created by Zhang Xuan, Wu Bingqian and Tang Yu (advisors: Shang Yuanyuan and Liu Dingyao), undergraduate students in Radio and Television at the School of Arts and Communication, won the second prize in the category of Digital Media Animation and Short Film - Documentary Professional Group!
“Roots” tells the story of traditional Chinese medicine with Wan Mizhai as the main character. Through interviews, literature, theoretical ideas, on-site observations and filming, it explores the audiovisual elements of authentic medicinal materials, inheritance and protection, medical ethics and humanistic thinking, and the dialectical philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine. It takes roots as the breakthrough point; herbs take root in soil and water; traditional Chinese medicine takes root in local experience; human beings are the foundation; the excellent traditional Chinese culture, with traditional Chinese medicine as an important component, is the root of the nation. By connecting these five root images layer by layer, the cultural communication and image expression of traditional Chinese medicine become more vivid and richer, and reaches the hearts of people.

The Chinese Collegiate Computing Competition is one of the earliest events for undergraduates in China, and is one of the top ranked events in the national college student competition rankings. Since the start of the competition in 2008 until 2019, it has been sponsored either independently or jointly by the universities under the Ministry of Education and computer-related teaching steering committees, etc. The purpose of the competition is to promote learning, teaching and innovation with the competition, and to serve the country to cultivate innovative, complex and application-oriented talents with comprehensive development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and skills.
The designated theme for the 2023 competition is “Traditional Chinese Medicine - Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture Series III”, aiming to promote the long history of traditional Chinese medicine in China, enhance national confidence, and promote the inheritance, innovation, and development of traditional Chinese medicine.
The School has always attached great importance to discipline competitions and insisted on combining daily teaching with discipline competitions to promote learning, teaching and innovation with competitions, so at to achieve the goal of cultivating composite and application-oriented talents.
