(Reported by Chen Jiayue) At 4:00 p.m. on the afternoon of April 18, 2023, the 33rd Arts and Communication Forum was held in the Academic Lecture Hall 1104 of Building of the School of Arts and Communication. Professor Lian Chunhai, a doctoral supervisor from the Institute of Fine Arts, Chinese National Academy of Arts was invited to give a lecture on “The conceptual origin and influence of cloud patterns in the Han Dynasty”. Design-related teachers and graduate students attended the lecture, which was presided over by Dean He Qingjun.
Prof. Lian Chunhai graduated from Peking University with a Ph.D. degree and has visited the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University for exchange. He is mainly engaged in the study of art history, art archaeology, and ancient material culture. He has published several monographs, including “A Research of Han Dynasty’s Mural on Artistic Archaeology”, “Recarving the Past: Concepts and Methods on Archaeology of Art”, “Image of Artifacts and Beliefs in the Han Dynasty”, and “A Research on Chariots and Horses in the Han Dynasty - Centered on Imperial Rites”.
Prof. Lian Chunhai mainly shared the image features of cloud patterns in the Han Dynasty, introducing the changing features of cloud patterns in the Han Dynasty from macro to micro, and from abstract to concrete in a simple and profound manner. Prof. Lian also emphasized the characteristics of times and the historical influence of cloud patterns in the Han Dynasty from the perspectives of belief and secularity, and related its artistic characteristics from the perspectives of communication and semiotics.
In the interactive session of the lecture, Prof. Lian Chunhai gave patient and detailed answers to the students’ questions, which broadened their academic horizons.
Finally, Dean He Qingjun summarized the lecture from three aspects. First, cloud patterns in the Han Dynasty are cultural images that were bred under the influence of thought, beliefs and secular concepts in the Han Dynasty; second, the lecture provided new research methods for exploring traditional culture and art; third, Prof. Lian’s academic growth path brought enlightenment to the students for their academic research.
The lecture ended with the conclusion of “inheriting excellent traditional Chinese culture, building Chinese cultural system, and improving national cultural soft power” in the enthusiastic applause from students and teachers.
