November 5, 2021

Good news! The pipa performance "If I were in the south" composed by our young teacher Chen Ruihao won the Silver Award of the "Dunhuang Award" for single instrument ensemble of Chinese hamber music!

The Dunhuang Cup, the Golden Bell Awards, Wenhua Award and CCTV National Instrumental Music Competition are known as the four major events of national instrumental music, and Dunhuang Cup is a national professional competition with a high gold content in the ethnic instrumental music category. A total of 115 works from home and abroad were shortlisted for the final selection of this year's Chinese Chamber Music Exhibition. The organizing committee specially invited famous composers and conductors from home and abroad and 30 professional folk music performers, composers, conductors and university teachers who were engaged in front-line performance and teaching to form the jury expert group and professional jury group respectively. Finally, among the new works of single instrument ensemble, three gold awards, six silver awards and nine bronze awards were generated.

Dr. Chen Ruihao graduated from the Composition Department of the China Conservatory of Music, majoring in composition, under the tutelage of Prof. Shi Wanchun. He studied piano since childhood, taught himself computer music production since 2007, studied master's degree at the School of Music of Shandong Normal University from 2014 to 2017, studied composition, harmony and orchestration with Mr. Shi Wanchun since 2016, and was enrolled in a full-time doctoral program in composition at the China Conservatory of Music in September 2018.

Years of dedicated study have borne fruit. Inspired by the rustic country blues music, Chen Ruihao composed the pipa performance "If I were in the south", which was supported by the Yang Jing Pipa Chamber Orchestra and won the silver award in the 2021 Dunhuang Award for the single instrument ensemble of Chinese chamber music. “If I were in the south”, which combined the characteristics of China's traditional instruments with Western music styles, was a delightful piece with dynamic soprano and majestic bass.

In addition to this, young teacher Chen Ruihao has many other works of ingenuity and creativity. The chamber ensemble piece "Faraway Clouds" intends to portray a sea of silvery rushing clouds, the improbable sound is like a distant cloud floating in the wind, as if it is far away from the sky, but seems to be close at hand, gently gathering and slowly surging, laying out and connecting. The pipa performance piece "Wuji" outlines the distant post-emergence of the empty mountains after the rain, interweaving the crispness of the pipa with the softness of the Erhu. The symphonic poems "The Competition of Huashan Mountain" and "Impression of Yimeng", the chamber opera "The Last Leaf", the string quartet "The beginning", the piano quartet "Seeking", the Erhu follow up "Nanshan", and the art song "Yizhou Song" are also his compositions.
