(Correspondent: Yuan Yue, Jie Li, Li Yiping; Photographer: Tang Yu) On the afternoon of May 27, 2021, Professor Guo Shengjian of Hunan Normal University gave an academic lecture entitled “Approachable College Aesthetic Education - Public Art Education Practice Based on the Concept of “Aesthetic Education Living”” in 1104 lecture hall of our School. This lecture was the fifth in a series of activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Guo Xiurong, Secretary of the Party Committee of our School, Yuan Yue, Deputy Dean, Peng Jing, Deputy Dean, and the teachers and students from the Department of Music and Department of Journalism attended this academic lecture.
Yuan Yue, Deputy Dean of the School, presided over the lecture and introduced the basic situation of Professor Guo Shengjian to the participating teachers and students. Professor Guo Shengjian is a T2 professor and doctoral supervisor of Hunan Normal University, vice-chairman of the National College Aesthetic Education Steering Committee, member and deputy secretary-general of the Art Education Committee of the Ministry of Education, member of the Sports Art Discipline Expert Committee of the National Textbook Committee, the earliest winner of a doctorate in education specializing in school art education in China, and senior visiting scholar at Teachers College, Columbia University and Berkeley College of Music in the United States.

Professor Guo Shengjian first analyzed the basic background of aesthetic education, briefly interpreted the spirit of the relevant requirements on public art education in colleges and universities in the documents on aesthetic education issued by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, and described the importance of aesthetic education. Then, from the perspective of the educational value and specific implementation of public art education in colleges and universities, he put forward and expounded four viewpoints: art makes college students live more healthily and humanely, art makes college students study more happily and efficiently, art makes college students more confident in employment, and art makes college students become more successful. Combining with the aesthetic education of Harvard University, Columbia University, and Hunan Normal University, he summarized the practical exploration and thinking of aesthetic education work as follows: diversified classroom teaching, normalization of practical activities, characteristic campus culture, collectivization of art exhibitions, specialization of teachers and coordination of management mechanisms.
Finally, Professor Guo Shengjian shared the short film of aesthetic education in Hunan Normal University and presented his aesthetic education books to teachers and students.
After the lecture, accompanied by Vice President Fu Anzhou, Professor Guo Shengjian visited our museum, and once again had an in-depth exchange on the aesthetic education construction of universities with engineering background.
