(Correspondent: Huang Weichen) Wuyuan in Jiangxi Province is the hometown of Zhu Xi, a famous philosopher and educator in the Southern Song Dynasty. Wuyuan County is named because the old county jurisdiction is “close to the source of Wushui”. Tuochuan Township in Wuyuan enjoys the reputation of “Tuochuan in painting” because of its beautiful natural scenery and simple and hospitable customs. What's more impressive is that Likeng Village in Tuochuan Township still retains distinctive Huizhou architecture. Whether it's carved beams and painted buildings made of all kinds of wood and stone bricks, exquisite architectural structures or deep-rooted official families, as long as we step into these pavilions, we will feel the breath of history.
Natural Scenery of Tuochuan
On July 10, under the leadership of Mr. Yang Zhe, Zheng Libo and Wang Tao, students from Class 1 and Class 4 of Grade 2020 in design major went to Tuochuan Township Art Sketching Base in Wuyuan County, Jiangxi Province for investigation and practice. On arrival, the students praised the beautiful and picturesque natural scenery of Tuochuan. Breathing the fresh air, even in the hot summer, the students’ faces were filled with infinite expectations for the investigation practice.
Feel the natural scenery on the way
The next day, the students and teachers went to Likeng Village under the guidance of the tour guide and met the famous Huizhou architecture. The Huizhou architecture here is very distinctive, the most famous of which is the various beam frame carvings made of wood, stone and brick. Different shapes of sculpture, decorative lines with various postures, or traditional shapes with patchwork, each of which made people marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship in ancient times.
Students also learned that Wuyuan County is the hometown of Zhu Xi, a pioneer of Neo-Confucianism, so it is filled with the wisdom of Neo-Confucianism.

Students also followed the teacher to Huangling, a famous tourist attraction in Wuyuan, and experienced the local commercial culture and the unique scenery of ancient buildings built beside the mountain.

Although the weather was extremely hot, the students were looking for inspiration in Tuochuan Township with the spirit of “hard work and plain living, seeking truth and being pragmatic”. No matter in an antique alley or by a beautiful stream, you could see the students everywhere. We have benefited a lot, accumulated rich experience for future study, and spent an unforgettable life of sketching.
